Red Boucher "the father of Alaska Baseball". Founder of the Fairbanks Goldpanners in 1959. Ex Goldpanner,Tom Seaver is quoted as saying, "the enthusiasm coach Boucher displayed instilled a great sense of pride in all his players, so much so in fact, that there still remains a feeling of brotherhood among us fortunate enough to have played for him." Red led the Goldpanners to a record of 337 wins against 118 losses, with eight state titles. He was honored as co-manager of the year by the National Baseball Congress. As written in Baseball Barnum by Bob Broeg, "Boucher and the Goldpanners flew to Witchita for the NBC Championship with a tranquilized black bear. The animal's presence created quite a stir but Red was dissapointed that his bench warmers decided to watch from the bullpen when the bear was deposited in the ball club's dugout. Red remembered humorously 'I had waivers on him' ".
